| The Celtic Purple Book explains the strategic importance of the
telecommunications playground in Europe and the significance of the telecommunications sector for future social and economic
development. It shows that there is a clear need for a major new R&D initiative in the telecommunications domain if the European
Telecommunications industry is to remain competitive and maintain its global leadership. The document also elaborates that comprehensive pan European co-operation is a mandatory condition for success and this includes an effective working partnership between Public Authorities, industry and academic institutions. Finally, it demonstrates that this Programme has a strategic role in the framework of the European Research Area (ERA) complementing other national, pan European and EC-sponsored programmes. The updated version 2007 of the Purple Book adds new work items and strategies and refers also to the strategic research agendas of the European Technology Platforms.
