About Celtic Award Winners:

Every Year the Celtic Core Group selects the three best projects, which have finished in last year for a Celtic Award in bronze, silver and gold.

The criteria for selection was based on the quality outcome of the reviews during mid-term and at the final stage.

Another important criterion is the reported impact by each project participant.

  • • Creation of new business
  • • Creation of new jobs
  • • New products, influencing world-wide standardisation or new technologies

The Gold Award Winner 2009 was
TRAMMS (Traffic Measurements and Models in Multi Service Networks)

José Jimenez, Andreas Aurelius, Heinz Brüggemann (from left)

The main objective of TRAMMS was to model traffic in multi-service IP networks, and to develop tools for monitoring of QoS and bottlenecks in networks. The lack of knowledge regarding traffic patterns in multi-service IP networks, so far, has been compensated by massive over-provisioning of resources. Understanding the user traffic patterns and how they aggregate on different levels provides a competitive advantage when deploying broadband networks and applications at significantly lower investment costs.

The project has impacted 7 product lines in 5 different companies. All of these products are aimed at finding the bottlenecks in the network and monitoring traffic and QoS parameters, and they complement to get a complete picture of the status of your network.
The TRAMMS results prove that it is possible to perform measurements in commercial operator networks without affecting their correct operation and respecting their privacy policies, as well as the privacy of the users.

To understand end user behaviour is of key importance for operators in order to provide the needed capacity in the right time and for system and equipment vendors in order to develop products that will be able to handle the foreseen increase in capacity for both fixed and mobile broadband networks.
Besides new products and improvements of existing products the project also led to several new jobs and a spin-off company.

The project was led by Andreas Aurelius, ACREO, Sweden. In the consortium 11 companies from 3 countries participated.

The Silver Award Winner 2009 was

B21C (Broadband for the 21st Century)

José Jimenez, Gérard Faria, Heinz Brüggemann (from left)

B21C focused on deployment considerations and extensive field testing of the three latest DVB technologies: DVB-H (TV to Handhelds), DVB-SH (Satellite to Handhelds) , and DVB-T2 (2nd generation of Terrestrial Digital TV).

The B21C consortium constituted a powerful task force involving all recognized experts & players in the Broadcasting arena: academic research laboratories, transmission equipment manufacturers, chipset and consumer equipment manufacturers, network operators. This large consortium covered the entire broadcast transmission value chain, bringing a considerable expertise in the domain, and contributing to the DVB consortium's work.

The project achieved the following important results:

  • Consolidated laboratory and field tests for DVB-H Mobile TV network deployment incl. transmission performance with channel models for pedestrian reception; optimized planning of Single Frequency Networks
  • DVB-SH validated through large scale laboratory and field testing
  • Considerable contribution made to the DVB-T2 standardisation
  • Provision of 17 of the 30 responses to the “DVB’s Call for Technologies” and obtaining the adoption of many B21C proposed concepts in the T2 standard.

As impact of the project results it is expected:
New products addressing the emerging market of T2 Terrestrial TV, with a commercial phase starting first in the UK at the end of 2009. Several prototypes of products were shown at IBC2008 and IBC 2009.

Optimised infrastructures and new services for operators. Operators and infrastructure providers increased considerably their expertise in network planning / deployment for the H and SH Mobile Technologies. First steps have been made in understanding network planning for T2.

Promotion of DVB technologies of its technical achievements at a large number of international publications and through its participation to several shows and conferences, including the International Broadcast Convention (IBC).

The project was led by Gérard Faria, TeamCast, France. 34 partners from 8 European countries participated in the very large project.

The Bronze Award Winner 2009 was:

EnComPAs-2 (Enabling Community Communications – Platforms and Applications phase 2

José Jimenez, Heinz Brüggemann, Valentin Alonso Alvarez (from left)

The main focus of the EnComPAs2 project is the management of home and extended home networked devices and services.

The project has introduced a Residential Gateway in the home network which provides and intelligent and integrated management platform allowing end-users, operators and service providers to make an easy and effective management of the services and connected devices at home.

The project had impact on new products, like residential gateway for deployment in Spanish households. Also in Israel and Netherlands new products based on project results are currently under development/ deployment:

A number of existing products were improved and new customers could be attracted as a result of the project outcomes. Also a number of concrete standard contributions were submitted to various bodies.

Finally, EnComPAs-2 was selected by EUREKA as Success Story and published through their magazines.

The project was led by Valentin Alonso Alvarez from Telefónica. The project consortium consisted of 5 partners from 3 countries.
