Turkcell joins Celtic Core Group

Further expansion of Eureka Cluster on telecommunications

At the Celtic Core Group meeting on 17 June 2008 in Oslo, Turkey’s largest mobile network operator, Turkcell, joined the Core Group of the Celtic Eureka Cluster. The Core Group has now 13 members from industry, operators and research from 10 countries.

 Celtic chairman José Jimenez welcomed the accession of Turkcell to the Core Group as an important step in getting even more active involvement from Turkey in Celtic projects. “I am very pleased that Turkcell joined the Celtic Core Group, as this marks an important strengthening of Celtic's research activities and an important step for the further growth of Turkey’s participation in Celtic.”

Dr. Coskun Sahin, Head of Turkcell R&D, expressed how important this step is for Turcell R&D and for Turkey: “We are glad to join Celtic Core Group. This will strengthen our connection with the research and innovation arena of the European telecommunication industry. We would like to share and explore visions and ideas, and create new channels of synergy in the ecosystem. We are going through a mutual growth with hundreds of solution providers, R&D agencies and business partners in Turkey, We are planning to get parts of this rich ecosystem involved in Celtic projects. We believe that our cooperation with Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK) and Celtic Core Group will facilitate new opportunities for strengthening research and innovation activities of all parties.”

The expansion of the Celtic Core Group is indicative of the growth of the Celtic Cluster in general. By the end of 2008, around 70 projects will have been launched, with a total budget of more than 500 million euro and over 5,000 person years of effort.

Celtic is a EUREKA Cluster, which initiates and runs privately and publicly funded R&D projects in the field of telecommunications. The initiative is supported by most of the major European players in communication technologies. Celtic projects focus on telecoms networks, applications, and services based on a complete-system approach. Celtic is the only European R&D programme fully dedicated to complete system-integrated telecommunications solutions. The size of the Celtic budget is in the range of 1 billion euro. Celtic is open to any kind of project participation from all EUREKA countries. So far, 29 countries are participating in Celtic. About Turkcell

Turkcell is the leading GSM operator in Turkey with 35.1 million postpaid and prepaid customers as of 31 March 2008 operating in a three player market with a market share of approximately 57 % as of 31 December 2007. In addition to high-quality wireless telephone services, Turkcell currently offers General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) countrywide and Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) in dense areas, which provide for both improved data and voice services.
