Award for identity management project FIDELITYEuropean R&D programme Celtic presents results in HelsinkiAt the third Celtic Event in Helsinki, Finland, on 27-28 February 2008, the European R&D project FIDELITY will be awarded as "Celtic Project of the Year 2007". The FIDELITY consortium of 11 partners from 5 European countries developed an innovative solution for federated identity management that will facilitate the secure and comfortable use of paid online services. FIDELITY and other outstanding projects carried out within Celtic's European R&D programme will present their results at the event in Helsinki, which is dedicated to "Telecommunications and Next Generation Internet". In the telecoms world of the future, the distinction between fixed and mobile will disappear, as Celtic chairman José Jimenez from Telefónica explains: "Communication access in the next generation Internet will be seamless, anytime, anywhere". Since its launch five years ago, the Celtic programme has produced a number of successful projects that provide end-to-end solutions for future networks. Within the one-billion-euro programme, 45 projects have been started since 2003, and 26 more projects are expected to be launched in 2008. Currently, there are about 350 companies from 25 countries involved in Celtic projects, about one third of them small and medium-sized enterprises. Mr Jimenez expects that by the end of 2008 the number of participating companies will have reached 450. He is convinced: "These industry-driven projects will help Europe to stay on top of the technological development in ICT." Out of the 22 completed projects since the start of Celtic 6 of the most successful projects will receive the Celtic Excellence Award. In addition, the Fidelity project will receive the award as "Celtic Project of the year 2007". FIDELITY will receive this award for its advanced identity management solution that solves the problem of multiple user authentication for paid online services. FIDELITY's secure and user-friendly authentication system will enable users to just log on once and then be authenticated for all other services on the Web. This user-friendly identity-management solution is based on so-called Circles of Trust, which include an identity provider responsible for user authentication, an attribute provider to manage the users' personal attributes, and a service provider to provide the actual service. Project leader France Telecom is already using the FIDELITY results to enhance the identity management in its Orange Healthcare services. Other partners, like Telenor in Norway, TeliaSonera in Sweden and Finland, and Italtel in Italy, have also taken steps for bringing the FIDELITY results to the market. "FIDELITY is an excellent example of Celtic's industry-driven end-to-end communication projects that will help Europe to stay on top of the technological development in ICT," said Mr Jimenez. At the Celtic Event in Helsinki's Marina Congress Centre 250 participants from 20 countries will be expected. The programme will start with keynote speeches by Petri Peltonen, Director-General at the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, and by Dr. Kari Tilli, Director at Finnish innovation agency Tekes, on innovation policy and strategy in Finland. The programme on the second day includes keynote speeches by Daniel Kofman, Professor at Telecom ParisTech and CTO of RAD Data Communications, and Dr. Joao da Silva, Director at the European Commission's Information Society and Media Directorate-General, on the Internet of the future. The event will be complemented by an exhibition of selected Celtic and Tekes projects.
