R2D2 Networks

Road to media-aware user-Dependant self-aDaptive

Abstract

With triple-play (IP-TV, IP-Telephony and Internet) services, households will have all their multimedia services delivered through a single broadband access link. Some services will have limited real-time Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, whereas other services, as e.g. IP-TV and IP-Telephony, will have strict real-time QoS requirements. In addition IP-TV demands fairly high bandwidth of several Mbps in order to function properly. When triple-play is in full operation, a single household may, at the same time, watch several IP-TV channels, download streaming media on a computer, execute a file sharing application, and use IP-telephony. The household members will expect their broadband access service to work perfectly at all times. They will not have to bother about how much bandwidth and QoS their broadband services require, and if they change their usage of services, the network will have to follow. From the network operator’s point of view, “Triple play” services are a high bandwidth demanding service that will require big investments. If the operators are able to differentiate their connectivity resources, they can better sell them to connectivity customers no matter if they are Services Providers, Packagers, Enterprise users or Residential users with specific requirements. Today’s networks, designed for providing just Broadband connectivity, will not be enough to satisfy customer’s needs and will necessarily support the introduction of new and innovative services. The access networks of the future should learn from the way the users are communicating, what services they are using, where, when, and how, and adapt accordingly. Furthermore, the networks will have to heal themselves, check that the services are offered in an optimum way, and adapt the network and the services before the customer starts even considering making a call to the customer support service.

R2D2Networks main outcome is a user-dependant media-aware self-adaptive network that will help the network to learn What, When, Where and How the services and resources are used. Starting from an understanding of the user usage, together with QoE (Quality of Experience) monitoring tools and Bandwidth supervisors, the project will move to an evolution of current home, in-building and access networks to an architecture with a better use of the connectivity resources and an optimization of the Quality of Service provided.
