Abstract
The introduction of “always on” broadband networks and the adoption of protocols such as SIP for the delivery of advanced VoIP telephony like services has resulted in potentially significant revenue losses for incumbent service providers. New service frameworks must be formulated and experimented with so as to generate additional value added revenues for all concerned parties in this value chain.

The GENESIS project aims to build a pre-productisation platform that is capable of serving and deploying advanced and integrated VoIP and value added business services for Small, Medium and Large Enterprises (SMLEs) over a Telco’s VPN service. The platform will be deployed on an NGN with an IPv6/IPv4 core network and customers will access all provided services from wired and wireless access networks. Customers’ CPEs will be integrated with the NGN providing NGN-ready CPEs with advanced features.

The GENESIS platform will provide a set of VoIP and value added business services that will enhance the Telco’s VPN services currently offered in the market of business communications. The solution will be developed based on a VoIP Service Execution Framework following a standard NGN architecture. The services will include Corporate plus Centrex IP like services in an integrated solution.

SMLEs will be interconnected through wired or wireless access networks and the core network will be based on IPv4/IPv6 state-of-the-art technologies. The platform will include the necessary services for the deployment and configuration of customers’ CPEs. The deployment will be based on standards and extensions to the standards will be proposed when needed. To support the deployment of these additional services the project intends to conduct research into technologies such as the OSGi Framework.

GENESIS will research the deployment of VoIP and value added business services over IPv6/IPv4 core networks. In the access network the GENESIS approach will be tested and validated in wired high speed lines and wireless access networks including WiMax mobile broadband technology.

GENESIS will conduct research into traffic engineering and QoS issues for VPNs on NGN networks using new IPv6 features. Furthermore future transition scenarios from IPv4 to IPv6 will be studied, modelled and laboratory tested in order to provide the GENESIS platform with the flexibility to work in these migration scenarios.
Finally, GENESIS will serve as a real prototype for development, validation, deployment and execution of advanced services, all of which are accessible from wireless and wired access networks and devices.
