We offer advanced solutions, tools and technology can
offer a huge benefit in Terminology/Ontology Management and Knowledge
Management (Content Management, Search and Retrieval, Information
Extraction, Text Mining, etc.) or building the infrastructure for the
Semantic Web.
Knowledge Management
Explicit knowledge is mostly documented in a free-text format. Tools
that make use of this free-text information are, for example, document
management systems, intranets and portals, communities of practice, etc.
L&C delivers technology that makes it possible to process this free-text
information in an intelligent way to optimize the search and retrieval
capabilities (by improving recall and precision as a result of semantic
indexing technology), extract information and structure it for further
processing including text mining, improve help desk workflows, create
and manage company-wide terminology systems, etc.
Terminology / Ontology Management
Different people use different terminology to mean the same thing. While
it is easy for humans to understand, it isn’t for computers. However,
when employees are searching for information, they want the system to
return all related articles without returning irrelevant ones, no matter
what terminology used.
With current search and retrieval technologies (e.g. keywords,
statistical systems) this is impossible since these technologies cannot
cope with different terminologies used for the same concept. The
solution is either to introduce a corporate-wide standard terminology
that everyone has to use or to develop a system that can understand
human language, i.e. an ontology: a conceptual representation of a
specific domain.
In both cases you need the tools to build the terminology or ontology.
For this L&C has developed a state-of-the-art terminology/ontology
management system called LinKFactory. With this tool it is possible to
create computer-understandable domain representations that consist of
domain concepts that are linked together to represent the relationships
they have. These concepts can then be linked to all possible terms that
exist to name the concepts. This way, it doesn’t matter what terminology
is used in documents in order to retrieve them when employees are
searching the knowledge base for information on that specific subject.
The Semantic Web
The Worldwide Web holds a massive amount of information but lacks the
intelligence to locate and share information in an effective and
efficient way. To solve this problem, development toward a Semantic Web
has started.
The Semantic Web is perceived as a "smart" worldwide web that has the
ability to understand data and the relationship between pieces of
information in human language and to distribute information, regardless
of the format or language it is stored in.
The Semantic Web holds the promise to make all this information
available by creating an infrastructure that makes interoperability of
data, computer systems and applications a reality.
The core technology required to develop the Semantic Web lies in
ontologies. Ontologies are conceptual representations of the world that
make it possible for computers to understand human language.
Since L&C’s core business is in Natural Language Processing technology,
we have developed great expertise in this area. We have developed a
state-of-the-art tool - the LinKFactory® - to develop the complex, large
scale, multi-lingual and formal ontologies needed for successful
development toward a Semantic Web, and our TeSSI® engine contains
middleware components for semantic indexing, search and retrieval and
information extraction that can be integrated into the Semantic Web
infrastructure to provide accurate information management regardless of
the language or format in which the data is stored.

GPU-Tech specialises in
accelerating time consuming algorithms and applications which are used
to solve different industrial, scientific problems.
We do this by porting these applications to the GPU (graphic processing
unit) in order to harness its enormous computing power. The GPU provides
greater computing power than the standard CPU processors, consumes less
energy and is widely available.
We have developed a set of libraries and API that allow you to directly
port your applications on the GPU instantly and transparently. We
already have several optimised routines which are widely used and have
published benchmarks on performance gains on our website.
Some of these include BLAS, LAPACK, Monte Carlo, Black & Scholes, Navier
& Stokes...etc
Our technology assures you precise results due to the ability to compute
in double and simple precision and is especially adapted to anyone
seeking to reduce costs in hardware and time to production. |

The TSSG's main area of research is communications
software services encompassing emerging architectures for management of
complex telecommunications and Internet systems.
The basic and applied research challenges addressed by
the TSSG’s include:
- Autonomic communications network and service
management: developing the underlying theoretical models for
allowing networks and services to self-manage, self-heal and
self-configure (self-governance).
- Energy efficient network management through the
real-time observation of energy usage patterns and the application
of innovative energy/cost reduction techniques using autonomic
principles.
- Investigating the underlying infrastructural
issues, relating to Quality of Service (QoS), security and mobility
of IP-based (and in particular IPv6) communications services.
- Investigating the Service Oriented Architectures
(SOA) paradigm for communications services, and in particular the
use of this paradigm for the design and deployment of dynamically
composed adaptive and pervasive services (in particular those that
leverage contextual information).
- Exploring the accounting, rating, metering and
billing issues relating to the previous themes including accounting
for dynamically composed services, and accounting in autonomic
environments.
- Tackling all of the above issues within the
emerging context of IMS platforms (IP Multimedia Subsystem) - the
core of the fixed-mobile convergence of mobile and traditional
telecommunications networks over IPv4 and IPv6.

Heterogeneous and Next-Generation Networks
Ubiwhere provides Consulting and R&D services on Telecommunications and
Computer Networking, namely, on Heterogeneous and Next-Generation
Networks.
A special emphasis is given to consulting services on IMS solutions and
the development of network monitoring tools, such as networking probes.
IMS – IP Multimedia Subsystem
IMS is the core research area of Ubiwhere. Our R&D activities comprise
analysis, design and development of IMS solutions (namely, IMS core
network components) for Portuguese major (fixed and mobile)
telecommunications operators.
Heterogeneous Networks
Beyond R&D activities related with Next-Generation Networks (mainly for
the telco industry), Ubiwhere also provides integration of Heterogeneous
Networks (i.e. with different access technologies, namely, Local and
Metropolitan Wireless AN, Fixed Line AN, Cellular AN and Satellite AN).
IP Probing System
We are currently developing monitoring tools for the VoIP network of
Portugal Telecom Comunicações (the major Portuguese telco). These tools
continually evaluate several QoS-related parameters of each VoIP
session.
Ubiquitous Computing and Pervasive Solutions
This R&D business area dedicates its research activities on Ubiquitous
Computing & Pervasive Networks and creating innovative services for
handheld devices. Special focus is attributed to Tourism, by the
development of location-based applications that enrich the tourist
experience.
All platforms
Ubiwhere develops its mobile applications in almost all mobile
platforms, namely, Android, iPhone, WM and Symbian (including Java and
Flash applications).
Tourism Mobile Guides
Ubiwhere develops ubiquitous/mobile applications for tourism.
The Mobile Travel Guide is a personalised travel guide solution designed
for handheld devices. It offers appropriate travel routes, considering
the user location and his personal preferences. The visit to a certain
city or region is enriched by location-based multimedia content (images,
photos, audio and video guides).
The Mobile Museum Guide is the "indoor product line extension" of the
MTG. It is also location-aware, and may be used as well for exhibitions,
expositions and fairs.
Integration with Pervasive Solutions and others
Ubiwhere is also interested in the integration of ubiquitous mobile
applications with context-aware pervasive systems, ambient intelligence,
sensor networks, augmented reality and other solutions for enriching
user experiences. |

Centre de Recerca i Investigació de
Catalunya (CRIC) is a private and multidisciplinary Research Centre
founded in 1997 that offers Research, Development and Innovation (R+D+I),
with the headquarters in Barcelona, and a staff of 40 employees. Our
operational model is based on three R+D+I departments: Industrial
Physics and Electronics (IPE) // Information Technology and
Telecommunications (ITT) // and Bioengineering (BIOENG).
ITT has extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience
in sensors and Wireless Sensor Networks based on Wi-Fi / IEEE 802.11,
Zigbee / IEEEE 802.15.4 and other wireless technologies, with in-house
capabilities in digital, analog and RF electronics, essential for the
development of low cost and low power sensor units. We have experience
in designing and developing sensor networks for residential, industrial,
agricultural, and metropolitan environments, as well as for body
sensors. We have also experience in mobile telephony such as GSM/GPRS/3G,
and in GNNS/GPS location technology. These technologies permit to
implement wireless measurements, intelligent remote managing systems,
and GPS-guided systems for disabled or elderly people. ITT is also
skilled in the development of embedded systems, based on
microcontrollers and DSPs, covering a wide range of applications
including low-power portable.
In the IT field, CRIC’s research activity is focused
on the areas of information technologies and artificial intelligence for
industry developments applying Multi-Agent Systems, intelligent agents
and intelligent Technologies such as Expert Systems (Rule Based, Case
Based Reasoning), Neural Networks, Fuzzy Systems, Bayesian Networks and
others. In client application developments, most are based on
cutting-edge web application technologies (JSP, AJAX…) and open source,
although local applications are also developed. Special interest is
given to e-learning technologies, where CRIC has previous expertise in
different projects by using well-known standard open source platforms
(e.g.: Moodle, ) and user-tailored platforms.
