Abstract

The VAMOS project is focused on providing new services for TV & Multi-screen devices in a way that is commercially scalable for services providers and device manufacturers. The core idea is bringing the same application development flexibility & speed to TV & multi-screen.

The main challenge of the VAMOS project is to get the online service virtualization and the universalization of the video devices through developing a new system based in a computing cloud capable to support any application over any end device, because of the increasing complexity of the application and multi-screen scenario. Currently the number of different target development platforms and the number of different viewing screens are both growing. In such scenario, supporting all the services on all screens implies supporting all the possible combinations.

The new feature of this project is that nowadays is not possible to find any similar system on the market capable to provide the differential aspects like easy interoperability between devices and applications and compatibility between application online and devices. Video technology has suffered very important changes in order to make life easier. According to that, newest end devices have required a complete mobility and therefore also contents and applications changed to wireless devices. Each actual device has its own technical and functional features and has to hold any application. In addition, customers are demanding a full-time access to any sort of information for different purposes that depends on the application. Not only the new system will have application for telecommunication and industrial sector where its applicability will be immediate but also this technology will be introduce in entertainment, medical and education sectors. Many advantages will be considered with VAMOS. On one hand, it will be possible to release of workload of end terminals making easier to run all kind of applications over the cloud and increasing its efficiency. On the other hand, it will make possible the compatibility between end devices and the applications. This new feature will allow the universalization of all of them. Other technical advantages to remark include new multi-screen applications, interfaces and customers interaction.

The result of the project will be the control of any device over different sort of terminals and also the new system will be able to have a powerful virtual device and an application execute layer. The new computing cloud will be able to manage and simplify the operations of video devices and therefore improve the quality of customers in their capability of information, communication and entertainment. Nowadays and for the next few years Virtualization Technology and Cloud Computing are the most interested topics in Telecommunication sector. By 2014, 85% of new software will be available as cloud services. In 2010, the total value of the cloud services market was estimated at 50 billion euro but it is expected to rise to 110 billion euro. Developing VAMOS project it is intended to be an important European reference thanks to the support and involvement of key partners belonging to the following countries: Spain, Poland, Turkey and Korea
