Abstract

The rise of Internet has changed the business logic within the media and communication sector. Communication solutions both from the Internet and from telecoms sector compete in fulfilling the end user needs, and end user itself is no longer a passive consumer but rather an active content creator and community builder. Business players are seeking for new business models providing for more comprehensive service experience and relationship with the customers and partners, combining electronic communication, media provisioning and advertising with deep segmentation and personalization. How to model and quantify this change? What are the roles and players in the business, and the foreseen regulatory framework? These are the core research areas for CINEMA. By means of techno-economic modeling and case studies, CINEMA will gain quantitative understanding of the subject.

CINEMA is divided into 6 work packages. WP1 “Content, end user behavior and demand” will assemble information on current and foreseen content and demand in communication systems. Based on this, forecasts are developed as input for the quantitative case studies. WP2 “Media Network Architectures and Cost models” will produce generic cost models necessary for the case studies with special focus on the cost differences between bundled and non-bundled service architectures. In WP3 “Future network regulatory framework” an impact assessment of regulatory measures will be done and the dynamic effects of regulation studied. WP4 “Business models and value networks” will analyze the roles of network and service operator, content provider, distributor, broker, etc., identifying the key players and their roles. WP5 “Cases studies” will develop the modeling platform and performs the quantitative analysis. Case studies will calculate the profitability for different players under varying conditions including risk and sensitivity analysis. WP6 “Dissemination and cooperation” will coordinate the activities with the cooperating IST projects and results dissemination.
