| Abstract | |||||
|
It is the objective of the Sub-project 100GET-Metro to
investigate 100 Gb/s transport technology for metro network applications. One main aspect of these investigations is the realization of cost effective solutions, which will enable the use of high data rate technologies also for enterprise users. To achieve this, a modulation format will be selected or developed, which combines lowest effort on the transmit and the received sides with highest system capacity and best tolerance to fiber system impairments to reduce compensation efforts. Various modulation formats will be considered, the most cost effective of which will be selected to be implemented in a transceiver module demonstrator. One constrain for this application is that signal channels shall be used for an upgrade of existing systems with 10 Gb/s or 40 Gb/s data rates over existing, sometimes lower quality, metro fiber plants. A second focus of this sub-project will therefore be on the evaluation of fiber effects on high data rate signals. As the spectral bandwidth of 100 Gb/s signal exceeds those of existing data rates, not only first order effects need to be considered, but higher order effects (2nd order PMD, dispersion slope, phase ripple, etc.) will have a severe impact on the transmission quality. It is an objective of this sub-project, to evaluate the impact of these effects and to develop solutions to compensate for these higher order effects. The third focus of this project will be on testing of the developed transceiver modules and compensation solutions. To this aim, a new testing procedure and equipment for PMD tolerance testing will be developed. Also components to emulate higher order distortions will be realized, which can be used for transceiver and system qualification. The modules developed in the frame of this sub-project will be tested using these test procedures and components in laboratory and field environment network.
